WellBuilt is a Pan-African venture studio building digital futures that last, and scale, for the Global Majority.

One judgment call runs through everything we build: right tech, right time. The most consequential AI systems are the most precisely scoped, built for a specific context, a specific need, a specific community. We know when an intelligence layer genuinely unlocks value, how to build it well, and when the honest answer is to build nothing at all.

African tech startups: Series A and B companies that have raised capital, hold a product-market-fit thesis, and are now integrating AI or building an LLM-powered layer. You have engineers, though not the specialised capability; budget, though not the time to hire a full AI team. You need someone who can come in, make fast decisions, and ship.

And African corporate innovation teams: the MTNs, Equity Banks, and Naspers subsidiaries running internal startup-style mandates. You carry the same ambition with deeper resources, and you need a build partner who can move at startup pace inside an enterprise.

We design the systems, methodologies, and documentation that let organisations run their programmes independently, without the consultant in the room.

We work with civil society organisations, development finance institutions, philanthropic foundations, and international programmes across Sub-Saharan Africa and beyond. Our outputs suit multilingual, multi-timezone, and low-bandwidth realities: async-ready, low-burden, and built to be adapted rather than followed rigidly.

Non-hierarchical design runs through everything we produce: methodologies that distribute authority rather than concentrate it, formats that assume no prior access to live coordination, and documentation that enables independent management rather than dependency.

We've worked with legacy tech giants like IBM, polarising market-makers like Meta, scrappy African startups now with multimillion-dollar valuations like SweepSouth, research sandboxes at Harvard and UCT, and on the same stages and pages as Nike's first-ever futurist-in-residence.

We've built an insurance product from the ground up, rebuilt an entire recruiting platform from scratch, and merged legacy sensors, IoT, and digitised process management into configurable dashboards for plant operators, plant managers, plant engineers, and manufacturing decision makers.

On the programme side: a five-year, USD 60M capacity-strengthening strategy at UCT's Bertha Centre for Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship, a USD 1M Rockefeller Foundation collaboration programme designed and delivered across six global collaboration pairs in four countries, a USD 62M private sector development facility for the Government of Lesotho, and partnership frameworks for the South African Department of Justice and Constitutional Development.

As a founding partner and editor of the African Life-Centric Design philosophy, we know that contexts across the Global Majority are uniquely demanding. And that's okay, because we're made of them, and for them.

The same question falls out of each. What gets structured as a result? Founded in January 2022 by Amukelani Muyanga, we are based in Johannesburg, and we work across Sub-Saharan Africa and online.

A structureless exchange hides its hierarchy rather than dissolving it; distributing authority takes deliberate design.

Today's LLMs are founded and funded by a small, often overlapping circle who train and design from Global Minority logic. The founding circle of WellBuilt is anchored by scholars of the political economy of ingenuity. The most consequential AI systems are the most precisely scoped, built for a specific context, a specific need, a specific community. We ship right-sized, precise, efficient, and built for the terrain.

As Prof. Kimberlé Crenshaw's intersectionality thesis established, the compounding of race, gender, class, disability, and geography creates lived realities that dominant systems stay structurally blind to. Distinct contexts call for distinct builds, with their own definitions of success, equity, and relevance, and their own failure modes.

A credit scoring model trained on Global Minority financial histories fails someone who has only ever transacted in cash. A healthcare AI misses presentations of disease that manifest differently across intersectional bodies. A hiring algorithm trained on Silicon Valley career ladders penalises non-linear professional paths.

The system was never built for this context. Power without context is just noise deployed at scale.

Beneath the mythology sits hidden infrastructure. The production of these technologies is also an ecological and labour crisis: data centres claim fresh water from drought-stressed communities, and pump toxins into the air of the neighbourhoods least positioned to fight back. Hundreds of thousands of workers label and train models for below minimum wage, their skilled knowledge broken into tiny disconnected tasks so the worker never sees the whole, never owns it, and can never leverage it: the intellectual equivalent of an assembly line.

Creators' intellectual property gets ingested without consent or compensation. And these systems hallucinate, confidently and at scale, in ways that can mislead people on serious matters: their health, their understanding of the law, their relationships.

These are the business model, not the edge cases.

The same holds for programmes. Methodologies designed in Global Minority contexts assume reliable bandwidth, a single working language, overlapping timezones, and teams with slack to spare. Deployed across the Global Majority, those assumptions become exclusions. Knowledge that cannot be owned by the people it serves is rent, not infrastructure.

Consider the ground itself. Ninety per cent of the world's data centre capacity sits in just two countries, the United States and China. Africa, home to a fifth of the world's people, holds under one per cent. The opportunity is to build a homegrown one: on data held on the continent, governed by African frameworks, powered by African capacity.

Selected Work. Products and programmes, one method. Three ground-up builds, a financial services product handling death and money, a recruitment platform serving five people at once, and an industrial IoT system for boilers we learned from scratch, alongside programme mandates spanning five countries and counting. What carries across all of them is a way of working: investigation before construction, and diagnosis before prescription. Go to the people who live the problem, read the psychology and the systems in play, find the shippable core inside the sprawling ambition, de-risk the expensive decisions through early analysis, measure what matters, and translate the strategy into the language of the person who has to act. The brief
CYA22KA Holdings had a sharp, counterintuitive idea: insurance for your insurance. Funeral and life policyholders would pay a small monthly fee to guarantee that, when they died, their beneficiaries would actually be found, paid out, and handed the documents they needed.

The problem it solves is real and large. Take out a policy for your three-year-old daughter and she won't know it exists, let alone remember the details fifty years later when you've passed. Multiply that across a country and the money piles up unclaimed: roughly R90 billion sits in unclaimed assets in South Africa (Financial Sector Conduct Authority, 2025–26), and of that, around 38%, some R33 billion, sits specifically in life insurance and investment policies (Association for Savings and Investment South Africa). Insurers, as well, face penalties on unpaid claims. So the incentive to disburse is aligned on every side: insurer, policyholder, and beneficiary alike. The issue was never the desire, it was infrastructure.

As a first order of business, we proposed the rebrand to ClaimIt! from a more complex name and website, which was investor facing, rather than being a user-centric acquisition engine. We tested a range of options ranked on memorability, resonance, catchiness, searchability, and SEO potential.
The constraints
Commercial viability came before anything else. The founder wanted the product to be widely accessible and had priced herself out of sustainability by default: starting at ZAR 7/month. Coaxing her upward was laborious: ZAR 7/month to ZAR 15, then reluctantly to ZAR 29 per month. We made the case on multiple fronts: that sustainability is the only way they can consistently deliver their solution; that a higher price signals higher value; and that something this cheap, handling matters as sensitive as death and money, reads as a scam. There was no sense pouring our time, effort, and funding into a business operationally set up to sink rather than swim. ZAR 29 ultimately stuck, a worthy compromise, validated when user interviews revealed nobody was willing to pay close to 25% of their monthly premium, with some policies as cheap as ZAR 100.

The data was thin. With fewer than ten active users, there was no meaningful historical record of the customer journey, so we were working largely off our own perceptions and assumptions. The small user base also made interviews scarce for a proper heuristics audit.

Availability was scattered. Because the company was making almost no money, the founder and her team all held full-time jobs, so their time was limited and fragmented. The hours the engagement demanded far exceeded market rate. We held the line and saw the work through even as the engagement overran and others stepped back, because the reliability mattered more than the economics.

Scope met reality. After the build, some contract-scoped technicalities clashed with what the design thinking had revealed was best for user experience and retention. Time pressure also forced us to make the build modular retroactively, so that an MVP could ship within the project timeline while the full suite was already designed as a functional prototype.
What we built
We transformed a small company whose original premise was "We'll notify your beneficiaries" into something far larger: "Let's help you protect your legacy." A shift from a feature to an identity.

OCR-driven onboarding. Manual policy entry was an obvious drop-off point, so we replaced it: upload your policy, have it read by Optical Character Recognition (OCR), and edit anything captured incorrectly. This removed the tedious friction losing users at the door, and minimised human error, which matters doubly here, because a company casual about detail accuracy undermines its own promise to actually reach your beneficiaries.

Auth designed for the majority. Given the target demographic was lower Living Standards Measure (LSM) users, we designed for the reality that everyone has a phone number that can receive messages free of charge, so signup, login, and password reset were built phone-number-first to acquire the majority, with email demoted to an optional two-factor authentication (2FA) feature people could add to their profiles after signing up.

The "My documents" archive. A digital version of what your great-grandmother kept in a special briefcase under the bed: her ID, her will, her policy documents. Access is governed by life status: only the policyholder can access it while alive, and only named beneficiaries can access it once the policyholder has passed.

Freemium tiers. We split the product so a hesitation at "Pay now" didn't cost us the user: a free tier to simply store your documents, and a paid tier for beneficiary track-down. Anyone drawn to the idea but not ready to commit stayed in the funnel, and marketing could strategically re-target them to upgrade at appropriate intervals. We turned a conversion cliff into a staged on-ramp.
What happened
The modular MVP is in rollout, with the full suite designed and proven as a functional prototype. The repositioning, the OCR onboarding, the phone-first architecture, the documents archive, and the freemium model are all part of the designed product.
What we learned about building in African market conditions
Design for the majority in your specific Global South context. The "default" pattern of email-first signup is a Global Minority assumption. Our target users live on phone numbers and free-to-receive messages. Building for who is actually there, rather than who the templates assume, is the whole game.

Pricing is product strategy, too. Sometimes the most important thing you build is the founder's conviction that their work is worth paying for. Price carries the signal of trust, especially when you're handling death and money, and sustainability is not separate from the product, it's the lifeblood of the product.

Turn the conversion cliff into a staged on-ramp. In a price-sensitive market, hesitation at checkout shouldn't mean a lost user. Freemium kept people in the funnel and gave marketing room to convert them at the right moment.

User education is part of the build. This was a new category, not an iteration on a known behaviour. "Why would I get this if I already have insurance?" was a real, recurring objection, and answering it, in the product and the positioning, was core work, not an afterthought. When you're creating a behaviour rather than refining one, the product has to teach as it sells.

Talent acquisition and recruitment technology · South Africa, placing globally · Full platform rebuild, candidate through to leadership, with Gather Design as UI partner

The brief
The Skills Mine is a woman-owned, Black-owned, B-BBEE Level 1 recruitment and head-hunting firm out of Sandton, with a strong tech-recruiting track record. They needed a full custom platform: a candidate-facing product, a recruiter portal, and management tooling, all built on a custom Applicant Tracking System (ATS).

The Skills Mine came to us after an earlier overhaul had not landed the way they had hoped, and they were keen to find an approach that fit. They knew our work from a previous build and asked us to take it on. We treated that as a responsibility: coming in after a first attempt means understanding why it stalled before proposing anything new.
The constraints
The feedback was the first problem to solve. The previous attempt could not ship, but the notes explaining why were vague: things like "too much white space." That is the tell. When a client cannot name what is wrong beyond surface notes, the work never connected at a level they could articulate, and there is nothing substantive to iterate on. So rather than reskinning, we treated it as a fresh build, and the first job was to diagnose what they could not put into words.

The domain was entirely new to us. We had never built with an applicant tracking system or any talent platform before. So we learned the whole domain from the ground up and architected for it, on the conviction that the method, discovery, user stories, the real jobs to be done, does not depend on having built the same thing before.

Five very different people had to be served at once. Where ClaimIt! had one user with several beneficiaries, The Skills Mine had five distinct people in the picture, each with their own goals and reporting needs: the candidate looking for a role; the client company that hired The Skills Mine to fill it; the recruiter doing the placing; the recruiters' manager; and the executive team. You cannot reskin your way through five competing sets of needs, and serving one well often meant being careful not to get in another's way.

It was a lot of ground for a lean team on a tight timeline. The full platform, candidate to executive, designed and architected against the clock, with Gather Design as our UI partner. The scope was enterprise; the runway was not.
What we built
We went back to first principles. Rather than taking "too much white space" at face value and pushing pixels, we re-ran discovery, mapped the user journeys, and rebuilt from user stories up across all five people the platform had to serve. The documentation reflects it: each flow is written as use cases derived from user stories, with the people involved, their goals, the scenarios, the alternative paths, and the technical requirements all specified before a screen is designed.

The recruiter's pipeline as a kanban board. The organising principle on the recruiter's side is a kanban board, and the logic that unlocked it is the ability to move a candidate along the stages of a role. This became the spine of the whole recruiter experience.

The recruiter and candidate views speak to each other automatically. An update on the recruiter's side reflects on the candidate's side. When a recruiter advances a candidate, the candidate sees their status move, with no manual double-entry and no candidate left wondering where they stand.

A client relationship tracker, built from scratch. Client companies are tracked by relationship health, from "needs attention" through to "hot," "warm," and "cold," with overdue counters calculated automatically against how recently each client should have been contacted, and timestamped notes that cannot be backdated, so the relationship history belongs to the firm rather than to any one recruiter.

Management tooling that changes altitude. The recruiters' manager can toggle between an overall conversion-and-efficiency view of the whole team and the individual pipelines of each recruiter, with a way to escalate systemic issues up to the executive team, automatically notifying them and keeping a clear record. For the executives, an at-a-glance view of the decision-making metrics that matter at their level.

Security designed in, not bolted on. The shared password-reset flow uses time-limited, single-use one-time PINs and returns deliberately generic responses so it cannot be used to discover which email addresses have accounts. Recruiter onboarding is invite-only, with single-use links that expire and a staff number checked against the HR records before any account can be created.

An executive dashboard mapped to its data lineage. Before any backend was built, we produced a full data-source mapping for the executive dashboard: every metric traced to its source system, its database fields, its calculation logic, and the open questions leadership had to decide before build, from how revenue is recognised to how job titles are standardised. It is the difference between a dashboard that looks right and one whose numbers can be trusted.
What happened
The platform is in development. All five journeys are fully documented as use cases from user stories, the recruiter and candidate experiences are designed and architected to stay in sync, the client relationship tracker is built from the ground up, and the executive dashboard's data requirements are mapped and pending sign-off before backend build.

What we learned about building in African market conditions
When feedback is vague, the job is to diagnose what the client could not articulate. "Too much white space" is not a design note, it is a signal that the work never connected. The easy move is to reskin until the client shrugs approval. We went underneath it, back to the jobs to be done, and rebuilt from there. That is the difference between a vendor and a partner.

First-principles thinking travels across domains. We had never touched an applicant tracking system, and a lean team still delivered a platform serving five different people, because the method, discovery, user stories, jobs to be done, does not depend on having built the same thing before. For a venture studio, mastering unfamiliar terrain quickly is the capability.

Architect for every person, not just the primary user. Five stakeholders meant five sets of goals, and the platform's job was to serve each without compromising the others: keeping the manager's view strategic rather than operational, keeping the candidate informed automatically, giving executives altitude without drowning them in detail. The systems thinking is the product.

Trust is built in the data lineage. Leadership does not trust a dashboard because it looks good. They trust it because they know where every number comes from. Mapping data sources, calculation logic, and the governance decisions before build is what makes executive tooling credible.

Industrial manufacturing and energy efficiency · South Africa · Design, architecture, and integration feasibility for an industrial IoT platform

The brief
InTouch Consulting set out to transform how energy-intensive industries run their boilers. Their vision, InTouch Orchestrate, uses Internet-of-Things (IoT) sensors, real-time analytics, and AI to cut fuel costs, lift thermal efficiency, and produce verified emissions reductions, helping South African manufacturers meet Minimum Emissions Standards while turning sustainability into profit. Industrial boilers burn enormous amounts of energy and drive a large share of manufacturing emissions, yet most plants still run on outdated visibility, manual tweaks, and reactive fixes.

The brief, at first, was everything in the world. The job was to find the shippable core inside a sprawling ambition, and our scope became exactly that: the design, the architecture, and the integration feasibility, the de-risking layer before anyone writes industrial control code, which is exactly where a mistake would be most expensive and most dangerous.
The constraints
The ambition had run ahead of the plan. The client had underestimated what she was asking for, and had already signed a memorandum of understanding with a major multinational beverage client, with a demo expected in about a week. A meaningful part of the early work was managing that expectation and helping her walk the commitment back gracefully, protecting a real client relationship from a promise the build could not yet honour. Slowing down an over-promise before it does damage is not a delay, it is the de-risking.

We knew nothing about boilers. Going in, we did not even know what a boiler was. YouTube videos only went so far and left us still confused. So on this build we prioritised user interviews like our lives depended on it, going straight to the operators, engineers, and managers who live with this equipment every day, because when a domain is genuinely opaque, the honest move is not to fake expertise, it is to go to the people who have it.

The technical terrain was unforgiving. Legacy sensors on old industrial equipment, the genuine complexity of combustion and boiler engineering, the realities of connectivity on a plant floor, and audit-grade emissions reporting for regulatory compliance. We also had to map which existing plant technology, like the plant managers' Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems, could interoperate with the platform, and what could actually be adjusted from the platform rather than only monitored.

Four very different people had to be served. The boiler operator, the plant manager, the engineer, and InTouch's own operations team, each needing a different view of the same plant.
What we built
We found the shippable core. Out of a vast vision, we produced a user story map and a tightly defined minimum viable product (MVP) across all four people the platform had to serve, with every story sorted into what ships first and what is deliberately deferred to later releases. The MVP succeeds, we decided, when four things are true: operators can see efficiency status without guessing, managers can pinpoint the financial cost of inefficiency in rands, engineers have the lever analysis to intervene effectively, and the system correctly classifies the root cause of any degradation into one of four categories: operator, mechanical, fuel, or sensor.

We designed for the operator who takes the fall. Our discovery surfaced a human truth the marketing vision had missed: operators get blamed for inefficiency they cannot see. The operator's own framing said it best, the need to keep pressure stable and efficiency high "without guessing or taking the fall." So the root-cause classification does double duty: it tells the plant whose problem it actually is, and it protects the operator from carrying blame for a mechanical, fuel, or sensor fault. The system that shows the truth also defends the person at the controls.

Role-specific dashboards, designed for build. Distinct views for the operator, the manager, the engineer, and InTouch's internal operations team, each surfacing only what that person needs, with exception-based alerts to cut the dashboard fatigue that plagues industrial monitoring.

Integration feasibility, mapped before code. We determined what existing plant technology the platform could talk to, what it could read, and what it could safely adjust, the unglamorous systems homework that separates a concept from something buildable on a live plant floor.
What happened
The design and architecture are complete: the user story map, the MVP definition, the four-person dashboard designs, and the SCADA interoperability mapping. Development is in planning phase. The expensive, dangerous decisions, what to build, what to defer, what the platform can safely control, were made before any industrial control code gets written.
What we learned about building in African market conditions
If you can't measure it, it's not worth anything. In an industrial setting this is literal. The entire value proposition is measurement: efficiency you can see, inefficiency you can cost in rands, emissions you can verify for compliance, root causes you can name. We built the MVP around what could be measured and proven, because in heavy industry an unverifiable claim is worthless and an unmeasured gain never happened.

When the domain is opaque, go to the people, not the videos. We knew nothing about boilers, and rather than fake it, we interviewed the operators, engineers, and managers relentlessly. The discovery that operators get blamed for what they cannot see shaped the most important feature in the build. You cannot get that from a manual.

De-risking sometimes means slowing the client down. The most valuable early work was not a feature, it was helping the founder walk back an over-promise before it damaged a relationship with a major client. Protecting a client from their own enthusiasm is part of the job.

Translate everything into the language of the decision-maker. For the operator that is a clear status and a safe range. For the manager it is rands lost and rands saved. For the engineer it is the levers that move efficiency. The same plant data, told four ways, because a number only creates action when it reaches the person who can act on it in terms they own.
